Conservation and Restoration of Heritage Buildings

Masters Brickwork and Stone Masonry are experienced in the conservation and restoration of Heritage Buildings. We understand the importance of preserving the history and character of our built environment. Our brick work and stonemasonry techniques are the same traditional methods that have been used for centuries. We have the knowledge and experience to ensure that an historic building can breathe again and remain true to its origins, thus safeguarding its heritage for future generations.

Our stonemasons are trained in conservation and restoration building techniques, as recognised by Historic England. Every conservation job is different and unique in their own way, and a good understanding of the geology of the stone is critical. The old traditional methods using an appropriate type of lime mortar cannot be underestimated. The use of incorrect mortar or poor workmanship will be to the detriment of the building and may result in a ten-fold increase in the rate of the deterioration in a historic building.

When repairing or restoring listed or historic buildings the right skills, methods and materials must be applied. In the first instance we work to identify why the stone work or brick is decaying and why it has failed, and then what materials are needed to recitfy and resolve the issues.

The conservation and restoration of a building may on occasions involve complete removal and replacement of the stone or brickwork using traditional stone-masonry techniques. Alternatively the removal of old coatings, or the use of specialist materials to carry out surface consolidation, repair and re-profiling can be carried out. The key to is to ensure that any repairs and restoration are carried out using the same quality of original materials as the original building.
